Default noob question, how to time a 86 2.5l?

im a jeep noob, but not a noob to cars.and yes i have a timing light.
it looks like the last owner put a new distributor in and put it in too far one way or another. it sorta looks like its not set up to be adjusted either??! the tab at the base of the dizzy is fixed to the shaft and theres a second peice to hold it in like there would be on most dizzys. i know fords have a PIP that you must disconnect to properly time it and i read a write up about disconnecting a vac line but my 86 has no vac advance on the dizzy. also i can rotate the dizzy alot while the engine is running and the idle doesnt hardly change at all.
the problems im having is my idle is too high and it jumps to 2k and will stay there for a long time before it goes to 1k. usually it stays at 1k once ive been driving a while. almost everytime i start it it idles very high for a while even if the motor is already warmed up. and this thing feels guttless.
another thing freeway speed at 60mph says my tach is at 3k with this 4spd stick is this right?
thanks in advance

non adjustable distributor! what the hell!?! i just found some info saying the 2.5l is non adjustable unless of course you nub off the tab. but it really doesnt seem to have much effect adjusting it like im used to on other makes. so i geuss i just hook up the timing light and go from there. im sure something has to be removed like a PIP like on fords so i dont expect to acurately time it till i find out what

easy.

To tell if it's off, you remove the spark plugs, and position the cylinder #1 to TDC with the timing mark on the harmonic balancer @ zero degrees (use a ratchet and the proper socket on the front bolt to the harmonic balancer to turn it....DO NOT use the starter to turn the motor).

then with a black permanent marker, find pole number one on the distributor cap. make a mark on the distributor base (directly below the cap right near the top of the distributor base itself) to indicate TDC#1.

remove cap.

look @ rotor and check position. [it may be 180 degrees off (can't remember if 2.5 liter cranks are 180 degree or 90 degree cranks), in which case, turn the engine again 180 degrees to get to TDC #1.]

If the rotor is very close to spot on then it's not your problem.

if it's off bad enough to not contact @ the right time, then you will unbolt the retainer bolt and remove the retainer bracket, lift the distributor up, and turn it back or forward (depending on your situation) approx. 1/16".

then take a long flathead screwdriver and a flashlight, look in the hole for the oil pump keyway.

Then insert flathead and turn it according to what you needed to adjust the rotor.

slide distributor back in hole (hopefully it keys in to the oil pump on the first try) and tighten it down. reinstall cap plugs and wires, and give her a try.

you may need to adjust a bit more than 1/16". but this should give you the procedure so you can get in the proper ballpark.
