ok so i have an 85 laredo lifted, size 32 shoes.4 inch rough country lift,
and i broke the rear spider gears( i think thats what there called) in my d35.... my guess what happened?.... the thing has 453k, no joke. so im guessin these are the orignal axles cuase they broke after like 3 weeks of me owning the thing...

so....
i was wondering if you gents know how to either replace the whole darn thing... or just the gears?... i mean i toasted them.... really bad. but reverse works

and i also threw the bearings in the front driveshaft( the part that connects to the transfer case, there is a housing with bearings that flew out.[is this normal in the axles?]what is this driveshaft






is it stock or did it have u-joints before?

Looks like you had a little bit of water in there to.The cheapest thing you could probably do is start looking in your local JYs and pick up a set of newer axles.Just make sure they have matching gear sets.

 

so just make sure the axle gear ratio is the same and maybe get a junkyard special?
yea there was QUITE a bit of water, the first thing i said when i pulled off the Dcover was " oh god" it was like the soupiest stuff ever. the previous owners where very lackluster in the upkeep of this vehicle.
(man you guys respond fast, i posted this ate dinner and BAM! you guys where on this post like 'white on rice on a paper plate in a snow storm')

junk yard best bet!! or craigslist i picked up a trail spare for 20 bucks.........

 

the previous owner probably was very lackluster in the upkeep but with that many miles on the vehicle you had a good 3 weeks and you didn't replace or check your fluids... you still have a front diff to worry about and transfer case and transmission and engine oil. don't forget about the coolant cause if it overheats I'm sure you'll blame the po on that too... I do hope you get it fixed without spending too much but remember that when you get something used it's always a good idea to go through it thoroughly before something like this happens... with that water in there I would be worried about the carrier bearings and pinion bearing as well... you may want to get a whole new used junkyard rear or completely rebuild yours... not just axles...

 

uh... I checked ALL the fluids( and everything else).when i went to buy this jeep, i bought and brought a jug of new oil, oilfilter, air filter, 80w90,coolant, my toolbox,wd40,camera, a bucket, tire iron, hydraulic jack,jackstands i break out my tools and tighten all bolts that i think could be a problem, i redo the star pattern on all the tires. i do this with every vehicle i buy...its cheap insurance...(for me its half the fun of buying, its like a hobby)

i had the thing in pieces before i even bought it




im not new to vehicles and upkeep(as i have bought and sold more cars than most people that are my age)and i knew damn well what i was getting into.
the front diff is fine, minus vaccuum lines i replaced on the spot. i have just never broken axle components...

Looks like somebody tried to make a custom drive line,thats not stock.

The JY, there are supposed to be loys of CFC available to pull parts off now.

 

How much water have you been going through to get that much in your rear diff? I think you said you checked it 3 weeks earlier so it must have been good then?
You may want to consider raising your axel breather lines up real high.

You need to buy a Submarine for your next piece of transportation!

you may be able to use a regular u-joint style shaft like this:

It uses an adapter plate for the ujoint to bolt to the transfercase.

i just looked on rockauto's site under '85 cherokee drive line parts...if you want to look into it as well.
