oh i beat the crap out of it. and still nothin

Jakeshain Jan 6, 2011 01:24 PM

trace the wire bundles to the hook up pack and make sure it's still securely plugged in.

Gee oh Dee Jan 6, 2011 01:27 PM

How do you know they didn't ground out?

There is a connector under the dash, sometimes it get corroded or damaged and gauges stop working.

Someone posted the same thing you posted, and it turned out to be the connections under the dash.

i will pull the wires out and take a look at them but i allways thought that if the oil and temp gauge ground out they spike when the key is turned on the only one that moves is the temp and it moves slow. but i will look at the bundle and report tomarrow. thanks for the ideas i hate wire issues:wallbash:

fuses, wiring, resistors, i really dont know much about gauges. there are alot of threads on this one, though. so maybe thru that.... ???? i hate electrical gremlins...

ok and now it gets weirder i was testing gauges and sending units and when i hooked a wire from the positive stud on the back of the alternator to the battery all my gauges worked and have continued working now for a week.

96 and up use the CCD Bus to carry the the signal from the PCM to the gauge cluster.. Fuel level is a seerate circuit. Typically, poor/dirty electrical contact on the cluster connectors is the cuprit. Pull the cluster and clean the connectors with electrical contacct cleaner, then add some dielectric grease.

Check all of the applicable fuses in the junction box and the PDC.

For the OP:
95 and older do not have the CCD Bus, instead they are individually wired. Obviously there is a common power issue with your rig. I'd suggest removing the wire you added, disconnecting the positice and negative battery cables and do a thorough inspection of the cables from the battery connections to every connection point in the engine compartment.

Bad battery cables and dirty grounds are very common, can cause all sorts of headaches.

Start there and let us know what you find.

after they started working i did shut it down and unhook the wire and they have been working ever since. i am going to do a little cleaning on the contacts this next weekend . the only other thing i have noticed is now sometimes the tach will start working like 3 seconds after everything else.
thanks
