You don't HAVE to do anything, but it will be a TON harder to see what's going on if everything is already covered in oil. Trust me you should definitely try.
Oh Lil Rustie, Youre my kinda girl. You care about your Jeep. Take the good advise and pressure wash your motor, not spending Too much time around the distributor cap/wires area, but spraying the valve cover, under the Intake/exhaust manifolds, oil filter, engine block above the oil pan, and then finally the entire oil pan. Spraying from the top of the engine, down. then drive her for a day or two, to let the leak come out, and trace where you see oil upwards, and you should find Rusties leak.

I wonder if it's possible to convince anyone to take a picture of the areas I should look at? I'm going to be doing this all on my own, without the net to fall back on (no internet where I live..out in the woods) So if I had pictures, or diagrams, I might have a better chance of finding what I'm looking for.
....too much to ask?

lol, I was thinkin the same thing...... too bad she isn't down here in Indiana (it's a whole lot cheaper to live here!) I could fix her XJ and in the meantime she could drive one of my three XJ's.... well, 1 on the road and one off road, #1's getting an engine overhaul.... if all else fails their is always the 97 Ram 2500HD 4x4 too....
Where in Indiana are you? I spent some time in South Bend, I loved it there. I could be convinced to go back for a while

just had my heater blower motor replaced, had the mech find the leak, and he told me that's where it was.
I live in fort mcmurray, canada. Dunno if any of you know of the place, but it's basically canada's "little texas". All oil, so we make great $$, and pay 3x the average cost for anything. On average, it's $195/hr for a mechanic...can't afford to get 2nd and third opinions, and i wouldn't even know where to begin looking at it myself.

I can't reach the back of the engine, lol, I'm only 5'2"
I have literally no friends here that are able to help, as the town I'm currently in is a busy oil town, and no one has time for anything but work.
I know there's fresh oil on TOP of my engine, or so it looks, nearly every time I pop my hood to top her off. I should take pictures....
Yeah, I think I'll take some pictures and see if that helps. ....would that help?
The mechanic who changed my heater blower motor agrees that it's the rear main, so should I believe him? He told me it's better off to keep topping her off, he wasn't trying to sell a big fix to me. So, why would he give me false information?

Hardy har har.
I can reach the places I need.... basically I'm able to top up the fluids and pump my own gas.
Oh, and I can reach the gas pedal

Right now were getting ready to get a snowstorm.... 3 to 5 inches which pretty much makes this state a disaster area....lol
I found the leak on my Jeep, not the front seal or oil pan as the dealer said... valve cover! Figures, they always go bad. But I got the "good" gasket to fix it, only $39.
Uh ho.... gotta go round up the 3 monsters.... sounds like they just escaped again

YAY!
It's NOT the rear main.
It's a fricken O-Ring that's worn out. A $7 part from Chrysler and roughly an hour labour. Riiiiiight on.
Just wanted to thank everyone for all the help and suggestions!
