Question Noisy distributor (new) cap.

First of all hello. My name is Jeff and I live in Prescott, AZ. My Jeep is a 1994 Cherokee sport that we are the original owners. Love the vehicle especially its 4WD.

Here's my question. I just did a tune-up including plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. The old cap was making some noise from that little black button on top. Now the new cap is making a diffrent and intermittent sqeeking. I pulled the cap and rotor back off to look for any obvious interference but don't see anything. When I grab the shaft that the rotor sits on, I feel almost zero slack or play. Or am I checking this wrong? So if there's no distributor shaft play, what could be causing this intermittent sqeeking? Is this normal and will go away after a few miles of break-in of the new cap and rotor?

Any help, advice, or past experience with the same greatly appreciated. Thank you,, and great site!!

Question Bushing?

Maybe distributor bushing squeeking? It's been cold and damp around here right about the same time I did the tune-up.

I drive it to school tomorrow (200 mi R.T.). . . I'll see if it remains the same, worse, or better. .

ANyone have a distributor bushing start squeeking really loud?

Default *Update*

Well after driving it to and from school, the squeaking and chirping started to get worse.

Got it home and pulled the distributor. Distributor was all but seized up. It was so tight, I'm not even sure how it was still running. Installed new distributor. Fired right up. Quiet and smooth. Test drove, (in a blinding snow storm here in Prescott, AZ.) All's good.

Here's an interesting detail from this repair .. We are the original owner's and that was the original distributor. The vehicle is a 1994, yet Chrysler installed the previous 1993 style distributor without the cam position sensor. Parts guys kept coming back with the wrong one I thought. They finally had to look up a '93 cherokee and it was a perfect match. I'm guessing my Cherokee got some of the last old distributor stock before they fully switched over to the newer CPS style. Weird.
