Hi,
Our Lexus kissed a wall, so we HAVE to use the 87 XJ Wagoneer for a long trip before a new lockdown in France.
I am so happy.
As the XJ is very noisy, my wife usually is a bit reluctant to use it for long trips.
preparing the car, I noticed a knock knock at idle.
not sure it was so loud before.
IYO what is the diagnostic / cure ?
btw, I also noticed a heavy white smoke.
weahter was on the cold and rainy side.
And I didn’t use the car for a week.
after 5 min dlin, it was still smoking.
After an hour driving on the highway, there were no visible smoke (and still water in the tank!)
should I worry?
thanks

You have an exhaust leak. Most likely the exhaust manifold is cracked. It's common. It's also not a huge problem. Just noisy and smelly.
The white smoke is probably from moisture in the exhaust system. If mine sits for about a week it will do the same. Just keep an eye on the temp and the coolant tank, but I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks.
The knocking is from the exhaust ?
might be the reason why there is so much noise in the cabin from 80km/h ?
I’ll look closely at exhaust manifold and the full line.

I definitely hear an exhaust leak. The audio on videos can be misleading sometimes though, so it's possible there could be a knock, but it sounds like exhaust to me.
