Short tale about my no start issue after doing a head gasket and motor mounts on a 99 cherokee 4.0 auto. After reassembly I had a crank/ no start issue which threw a p0340. Visual inspection of the terminals showed some corrosion. Cps had a high resistance. Grounds where checked and refreshed. Continuity was checked from the a18 pin on the pcm to the cam sensor pigtail. 30ish ohms of resistance. Still had a no start issue so out came the cam position sensor/ distributor indexing sensor/ injector synchronization sensor. There are a few names for it depending on what parts store you go to.

Here you can see the break from the underside of the connection as the wires exit the weatherpack. Temporary pins were sodered in and put into the correct terminal. The jeep now starts without codes. I have read that a poor cam signal will still enable the ignition to fire but the loss of any 5v sensor communication entirely will cut ignition.
