Besides the rare DRB-2 scanner, I think there is a Snap-On, (2500?), that might help with your Renix.

I brought the coil into my auto class today and bench tested it. So.... Ignition control module now? My friend has a msd set up that hes not using and i may be able to get for free. Would that be a good option for a long term replacement?

Ive tried searching but didnt find many clear answers to my msd ignition box idea. How difficult of a job is it to swap the icu to a msd box? I have a msd 6al that ive wired into my racecar once. But i wired the whole car, so i knew what every wire went to and came from. I mean, i know the basics. Are there any adaptors available for the renix jeeps?

Just go get a new coil, or get one from a SY. Don't complicate your problem by trying to modify stuff before you get it running again.

Try this?

Renix Jeep ICU/Coil contact refreshing

The contacts between the coil and the ICU on your Renix Jeep can become corroded and loose causing a complete or intermittent no-start condition. I recommend the following procedure as a maintenance precaution to insure this is eliminated as a possible cause now and in the future.
The coil is attached to the ICU by two T20 Torx bolts. Remove these two bolts and lift the coil up off the ICU. You will see 2 pins and 2 sets of contacts. Clean both the pins and springy contact pieces with a good electronics cleaner and some fine sandpaper.
Squeeze the springy contacts closer together with some needlenose pliers. Bolt the coil back on to the ICU.
While you’re right there, unplug the connectors from the ICU and inspect the pins in the harness connector. Make sure the pins are not retracted into the connector. Spray out the connector and the receptacle of the ICU with the same good electronics cleaner you used earlier.
I feel this procedure should be performed at least once in the lifetime of a Renix Jeep.

My 02 is that the welder might have taken out some sensitive electronic thing, like the ICU or the ECU. (is why I was thinking of finding a scanner)

I might swap/change relays and check fuses, although...well for lack of a better idea. Does the fuel pump run a couple of seconds when you turn on the ign?

He said he is getting power TO the coil. If there is no power AFTER the coil, then I would first suspect the coil as I said earlier.

If a SY wants $50 for a used one, how much is a new one from NAPA or O'Reilly's?

When i get home today, ill try and give everything a good cleaning. Maybe that will help.

I misspoke when i said i had power to the coil. Sorry guys. I tested the power to the icu, not the coil.

I checked all the fuses and all of them seem fine. Everything works as normal in terms of fuel pump, lights, radio, blower.

I only have access to a snap-on obd2 type scan tool. Im assuming that they wont work.

Short of finding someone with a DRB II or a Snap-On 2500 scanner, you might " break it down"

Your CPS sends a signal to your ECU to tell it to fire both the injectors and the spark. You might rule out some stuff if you find your injectors are firing.

You can google "noid light" to see about power to the injectors. Supposedly you can do it with a dash light, didn't work for me. I used a 4.5 V bulb from a 3 cell Mag-Light. > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPdkU...ature=youtu.be

The ECU won't do squat until it gets a signal from the CPS that its turning over more than 300 rpm's for a rev or two.

AC voltage CPS test; Small clips on the meter leads really helps.

Unplug the connector at the back of the manifold with wires going down to the bell-housing/cps.
Probe the two wires to the cps with the meter set on AC volts. (a 200 scale on mine).
Crank the engine and note the voltage. (jump it if your battery is low)

.3 is minimum, There is more in Cruisers writings.

I checked my injectors like this...

1987....Do you have the Motorcraft-style ignition? Gray metal box with two pigtail connectors?
If so that thing fails when you sneeze at it. No power to the coil is a different issue though. Hard to suggest much else without knowing which ignition you have.
MSD does (or at least did many years ago) sell an adapter kit to use their ignition box and coil in place of the Motorcraft stuff. It seemed to live longer, it ran quite a bit cooler.
But I agree with getting the STOCK system operating first, else you'll be adding a new layer of uncertainty on top of the one that's already there. Figure out why there's no power to the coil, replacing the ignition box and coil won't fix that. That is an ignition switch/fusible link/wiring harness/resistor wire sort of problem. Is there power at the Ignition terminal on the start relay when you crank the motor?

I'd bet he's "RR" Chuck. (regular Renix). Why not take a west coast vacation and let me help you with your engine?

What ACV did you get from the CPS?
