Default No headlights at all when cold, plz help

last night, st. louis had its first near freeze. Went out to trusty old jeep cherokee 98 and she fired right up. pulled headlight switch and amber lights came on but no headlights. pulled dimmer switch for brights and nothing! pushed forward, still nothing! blinkers worked.

turned on hazard lights and one side came on and the other didn't

to me that rules out corrosion on light connections, all fuses, switches, so to me that means it could only be a relay? Someone mentioned a bad headlamp delay module in another thread, but I don't believe my cherokee has that horrible feature...
so can anyone help me figure this one out? thanks!

Maybe they have simply gone bad. If you have and friends with an xj close by, just switch lights real quick, rule that out first.

Check fuses 1st then check connector to the light it self. Then i would look for any ground wires and move around.

Sorry I forgot to include that about 10 min into the drive they came on. When I got to work they worked just fine. Brights and everything. So to me that rules out bad fuses etc. sorry!!

You're correct if it were actually a fuse, it isn't. Rather a relay, suggest you unplug and replug the headlight relay, likely a poor/corroded connection.

I've been having this problem too, my thought is the switch. (pull/plunger/w.e. its called). it doesn't make sense. after its warmed up they come on. extremely hard to test because if you're diagnosing and whatever it is warms up and it comes on.while you testing you might think you found it. but in reality its coincidence. i want to figure this out as well because its annoying. mine happens when its cold/cold damp/wet

Does '98 have headlight relays? Most years do not. Power runs directly through the switch, which is what's probably failing.

It might just be the swicth. It it gets cold enough the contacts might not contact anymore because of the ware of 20 years of use. I would let it run and crank te heat up till it gets that swicth warm. But also see if your high beams work

My first thought was relay since those tend to stick in colder weather when they've aged a bit, but if there is no relay for the headlight circuit in the XJ's then my money is on the headlight switch all the way.

Headlight Switch...Mine did the same thing. Low beams don't work, but high beams do.
