Default No bus...I know. I have searched and tried.

Ok. Before people get upset - I have read on a number of forums about the "no bus" code and dead gauges. I have tried a number of fixes. I'm hoping that some of you will take pity and offer suggestions on next steps. Short of going to the Jeep dealer.

2000 Jeep XJ. 175k. Gauges periodically go dead. Cluster still lit. Gauge "self-check" performs properly. Problem is intermittent but when it goes out will stay out for days at a time. Usually all gauges dead but sometimes just the speedometer or the tach.

Fixes tried: banging on dash; removed gauge cluster, cleaned all contacts, applied di-electric grease. Did "reset." Gauges still not working. Truck runs fine (well...needs a tune-up) otherwise.

Going to check the grounds tomorrow. Any other thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Tony

I've heard some people say this can be caused by a corroded airbag control module ground.

If the engine does NOT run and you have a no-bus, then the crank sensor is the primary suspect.

However, he states that the engine runs fine. If it runs, the crank sensor has to be working properly.

This is something relating to the cluster.......

My engine would run randomly and then shut off then it would say the infamous "no bus". Thats why i suspected the CPS, because ive been there.

And that was the right fix for you. His engine does not shut off. It runs fine; read his initial post.

His problem is not the crank sensor. Trust me. If the crank sensor is failing, you will not have spark and you will not have fuel going to the fuel injectors.

Check the BCM connections and ground. I'm assuming the Cherokee has a bcm...

I work on Chrysler vans of the same years and they occasionally have this problem and it is usually a ground issue at the bcm. Or it could be an actual problem in the bus wiring.

This problem is commonly fixed by buying a new wire harness that goes to the gauge cluster from Chrysler. When I had this problem, I got lucky and cleaning the connections fixed the problem.

I tried banging on the dash to no avail. It appears as though the problem surfaces when the weather is damp. This would indicate a connection problem. Pushing on the **** that changes the odometer setting from actual to trip resets the problem. Any ideas on a permanent fix would be appreciated.

Have you tried pulling the panel and cleaning/reseating the two cluster connectors? If you do this and it still doesn't work it may be that your cluster has a short. Find a local pick and pull there are plenty of XJs out there to pull one from.

I found this thread researching the same exact problem. I also have a 2000 xj with 150k on it. Whenever it is damp, the airbag light comes on and then the cluster goes dead. Sometime I get "No bus" with dead cluster and airbag light but other times I just get the airbag light and dead cluster. I will try to locate the airbag control module. Does anyone know where it is and where the ground connection point is?

The Airbag Control Module is under the center console. The ground for it is G200.
