my 92 sounds the same way 172k. it sounded like that after I put in my apn header 703 injectors and exaust. I thought maybe the header was leaking or the exaust was hitting the bolt on the flywheel cover but it that wasnt it so I asumed it was from the upgrades. now I dont know

same noise with me. 95 with 157xxx on it, the motor was replaced before i got it with a bone yard motor with 80xxx on it. it sat for 6 years after it got put in so i think that its a stuck lifter.

mine is the same. i have a few ideas and tried a few things. i know mine is lifter issue. when i drain old out and put new in i start it up to run it thru the lifter are dry and rattle like a ***** until they are full then it goes away but i can still hear it at certain rpms. and i can hear it during start ups. so i know its a common issue for the lifters to be loud. it seems not as noisy when i have oil pressure but after the pressure drops it gets to were i can hear it more often
that stuff is not good for the engine it is a bandaid and is actually doing damage, if it is lifter noise you need to take the valve cover off and run it and watch for a sticking lifter or it will grind down the crank then you have MUCH bigger issues. due to no longer having a lope in your crank
3 different forums, and a half a dozen friends suggested trying it before doing the lifters.. With good reviews.
What kind of damage? It's been around a lot longer than me. I'm sure it has a track record by now. Is it good or bad?

mine sounds the same way too, 270000 plus miles on it. probably the rockers and lifters and rods and such bangin, which means a rebuild. my stepsons 93 i6 wrangler doesnt even sound like that, its pretty damn quiet.

Something to try and I am sure someone will tell me this is wrong, but change the oil, with out changing the filter, and toss in one bottle of transmission fluid so 4 quarts of oil, 1 quart trans, and run it for a bout 200-300 miles, and see if that doesn't help it, if its a gummed up lifter that will clear it out.
As transmission fluid has more detergent in it, it helps free up some things, and also cleans out any light build up, that or sea foam.
I just sea foamed mine after swapping heads, it needed it badly i had sludge everywhere, and i mean caked on, changed my oil after 500 miles (sea foam) and its was thin and jet black, so I know my motor is cleaner now...
Trans will work for small stuck parts though, if its something major the only way to know for sure is to get in there and check it out, take the cover off.

There is nothing on the bottle that i read that said take it out that fast, I used half in oil and half in gas tank (pistons had build up on them), I was shooting for 300 miles but didn't get to it till today.
In the oil, it would have to have time to get all over inside the motor, and get to it when its warm and soft (the crud) so it can dissolve it, and change it warm to help it flow, I have never had oil that black after 500 miles, I'm glad i did it, and no running issues, that with high way driving, I went almost 4 hours non stop after i put it in. I didn't notice anything wrong, no sounds, no smoke just running better.

i pulled the codes and only got a 55, so i guess the pcm isnt seeing anything.
Im gonna pull the inspection cover again today and take a closer look.

well, i think i figured it out
. I drained about a quart of oil and put in a quart of ATF and did a "italian tune-up" ( mashed it to the floor a couple times going down the highway ) and the ticking has gotten a lot quieter. Im gonna leave the ATF in there for about 200 more miles and see what happens.

I think I will try it. Is my '98 the only 4.0 that takes 6 quarts for an oil change with a filter. I put in five quarts let it run a while, shut it off. Wait one minute, and check it. I always have to add one more quart. That brings it to just a hair below the full mark. I never overfill, because that bad for the engine.
