hey everyone. just bought a 99 2 door xj 4.0 auto. i have a few questions so i decided to learn as much as possible by registering. so heres the thing, when i took the xj for a test drive, i took it to auto zone for a free scan. 2 codes came up. p1698 and p1694. something about no pcm connection or something. the MIL light is not on and the jeep does start up and doesnt die out or overheat. i do have a misfire at idle as it stumbles but not during acceleration. again no MIL light up and it always starts right up. any help would be great. very excited to join the jeep xj community. i did look at other posts but their problems were a bit different. thanks in advance

Start with a complete tune up. Spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel injector cleaner. It's cheap to do and is always a good place to start
Wish I knew codes a bit better. But symptom sounds like o2 sensor. Go to a garage and see of they have more than just a code reader, an actual diagnostic machine (and a decent mechanic) should be able to give you somethin more specific. Even if MIL (btw, call it an CEL on here
) isn't on, codes may be stored in there.

Here's the codes you specified in your original post and the possible causes, as stated in the '99 Factory Service Manual (FSM), Section 25:
P1698 No CCD Messages received from PCM - Bus communication failure to PCM. A "
P1694 Fault In Companion Module - No CCD/J1850 messages received from the powertrain control module-Aisin transmission.
P1694 (M) No CCD Messages received from ECM - Bus communication failure to PCM.
P1698 No CCD/J1850 Message From TCM - No CCD/J1850 messages received from the electronic transmission control module (EATX) or the Aisin transmission controller.
P1698 No CCD Messages received from PCM - Bus communication failure to PCM. A "
Companion DTC"
The (M) associated with the P1694 code is to show that this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will turn on the CHECK ENGINE lamp (CEL).
To check if your CHECK ENGINE lamp bulb is good turn the ignition key to RUN, but don't start the engine. The CEL will illuminate for a moment then go out. If the CEL does not illuminate the bulb may be burned out.
Note that two P1694 codes and two P1698 codes are listed. These codes indicate that there is a problem with module communication on the Chrysler Crash Detection (CCD) Bus. This could be a bad module or its wiring. In depth troubleshooting is required to isolate the cause, and if you don't have the FSM wiring diagrams, don't have access to a digital Volt/Ohmmeter, are not skilled at troubleshooting electrical systems, and are not very familiar with the location of the modules, connectors, and wiring in the XJ, I would suggest you take it to a shop that can isolate, and fix, the problem(s) for you.
Here's a schematic of the CCD Bus and the modules connected to it:
