Default New XJ - Fixing the issues

Hello everyone,

I got my 98 XJ a week ago, and trying to figure out some of the issues on it.

I can not figure out what is the making the noises in the links below. The Idling mp3 I get the ticking noises which started recently (when it started getting really cold). The second is when I turn the wheels to full lock and get grinding noise (9s and 12s mark).

Pictures on the link too for those interested (before I start my teardown/build thread).

My guess its the power steering pump. What do you guys think?

I will be tearing it apart next weekend (tools are not here yet - side effect of owning new cars before) to inspect everything else, but want to get some ideas on the above so that I add it to my inspect list it or get the parts in advance.

-Thanks
Aleks

I had a similar noise start up recently. It sounded like it was coming from the power steering pump. It turned out to be my idler pulley (they do wear out and make noise).

Cant open your link.
But the noise in full lock is likely related to the PS pump or steering gear. Make sure PS fluid is up to level.

It's been a month, so how did you go with the ' tearing apart'?

Haven't gotten down to tear down, too damn cold. Small space heater is not doing much for a garage (more like a barn) full of holes.

However I did replace the water pump, ps pump, idler pulley and the belt. When I took them off, they all seemed fairly new, but better safe then sorry (and ticking is gone). Got it running on Rotella, put in new diff fluids. Its running like a champ now, getting 15+ mpg on the highway.

I still get slight noise when I turn, but it does not sound nowhere near as bad as it did last time. I am writing it of as normal jeep noise.

Come spring time, its gonna be busy weekends!
