So I hooked up an OBD II scanner to see if I could figure out what's going on with my transmission. I didn't have a CEL on, but was told to try it anyways.
The scanner said "could not find link". So I followed the instructions to try to re-link it, but it still wouldn't do it. So I tried a different scanner...same exact thing.
The engine itself runs fine, and starts with no problem. Tranny is just having problems with the torque converter locking and unlocking and the wrong times.
And according to the scanner, I know there's power at the scanner port.
What do I begin to check?

there have benn other people with the same problem they were tring to get codes at repair shops some scanners will nmot access them others will
Awesome. That worked, although I'll have to wait after 50 key cycles to make sure what it is. At least I know it's not the ECM. Thanks again!
I've had similar difficulty (recently) when using one of the smaller el-cheapo hand-held scanners but was able to conduct the scan when I gained access to a better one. I have since found and purchased a decent one for just under $100.
About ten years ago (while still under warranty) I got the dreaded "no bus" display in the digital odometer window. I snuck into the dealership's shop while it was being serviced and found the tech cutting and crimping the under-dash wiring to the OBDII connector. When I asked what was broken he said there were bad crimps at the connector, that one wire broke then shorted and that a couple of other wires had strands that either shorted to other contacts or would have sooner or later. There've been no other databus or OBDII issues since.

Now that's got my attention, too. Because I swear that my tranny problem is electrical...more specifically, a ground issue. I guess I'll be starting at that connector.

The kickdown cable was the first thing I did. I did buy a used TCM, thinking that even if it wasn't perfect, it would give me a different problem. It didn't change a thing. I replaced the TPS as well. (I actually did this twice, thinking that maybe I just happened to get a bad one)

Yes, I unhooked the TCM, and it shifted just fine. 1st, 3rd, OD...no prob. A for the 50 key cycles, I had unhooked the battery for quite a while the other night...and that was the code that flashed...12.
No...not personally. I just got it in December, and haven't done much to it...except for the above. The PO had said he replaced the tranny with a lower mileage unit because he thought 4th gear had gone out. When I test drove it, there wasn't a problem at the time. I know he put a new Pioneer deck in...do the TCM wires run anywhere behind that?
