Hey guys, i have an interesting situation. My jeeps 4.0 has a rod knock however i have the opportunity to buy a 4.0 off a friend for a couple hundred bucks! My question is this: when i get the motor from my friend ill have some time before installing it, what tune ups/checks should i do that would be a ton easier with the motor out of the vehicle?

 

I would replace the expansion plugs and any gaskets/seals that are leaking.

 

cam and lifters... as stated freeze plugs and all gaskets/ seals/ timing gears if needed when swapping cam....

 

Pull the oil pan and take a good look at the piston skirts for any signs of cracking or stress.

What year motor and how many miles? Do you know anything of it's history or maintenance?
