My 1999 is my second Sport. Had a 2001 which o just had to put to rest with 437,000 miles. I am having trouble with the power windows for the drivers side. Was working intermittently but not at all now. Other power windows work. Any thoughts?
Went through the same with my 1999 XJ. Drivers window was intermittent. It finally died. I had a spare regulator assembly and swapped it in. Works now. The electric motor died on mine. I pulled the motor off and took it apart. The windings were burned. I think if someone replaces the drivers door with an aftermarket (Dorman) window regulator, it will die faster than an OEM one. I found that the cheap aftermarket ones have a smaller/shorter electric motor that HATES the Auto-Down mode on the drivers switch. The Auto-Down actually stalls the motor for a second and something in the dash detects the extra load and clicks off. THAT is a killer on an electric motor.
It is also possible to just replace the MOTOR assembly and not the entire window regulator.
The motor assembly bolts into the regulator assembly in place of the manual window crank.
If you remove the door panel (Ask if you don't know how to), there are 3 10MM bolts holding the window motor assembly near the bottom of the door. Just loosen those and the motor assembly should be able to "finagle" out through the large hole. You will need to unhook the power plug on the motor. Just slide the RED tab about 1/4 inch, then pinch at the bottom of the plug and pull. It comes apart easily. DONT tear it apart like a previous owner on my 1997.. It will never work right again. Use the tabs to disassemble. ONLY use a small straight screwdriver to help slide the red TAB over. DO NOT PRY.
Once you get the motor assembly out, it will still be attached to the window cable. There are 3 more 10MM nuts that hold the electric motor assembly to the regulator cable. Undo those and the assembly will pop off.
(Sample Cherokee Window Lift Motor) The aftermarket ones use an electric motor (at bottom) that is about HALF as long as the OEM ones. And the "gear" that slips on the shaft is thinner on the cheap ones. Plus the shaft is 1/4 inch instead of 7/16.
I suggest a junkyard for JUST the motor assembly (ProTip: Ask for drivers side REAR door motor. Less usage and possibly cheaper.). The "gear" that drives the window cable simply pops off the shaft. The aftermarket assemblies use a smaller shafted motor and the OEM has a 7/16ish shaft on the output gear. You can drill out the Dorman regulators and make a factory OEM motor assembly work. The electric motor assemblies are different for drivers and passengers side BUT the same-door side will work for the motors. IF you want to save some $, pull the motor assembly from the drivers REAR door and swap with the front door. The rear doors never get used so that motor is probably still newish. Of course your rear door window won't work then...
IF you are removing the entire regulator assembly, you will need to lower the window about halfway to get to the 2 10MM bolts that hold it in. If your motor is completely dead, remove the motor assembly and carefully push the window down halfway.
After removing the 2 10MM bolts that hold the glass in, carefully tip and remove the glass and set somewhere safe before removing the entire regulator.
Amazon has the "Chrysler Door Retainer Clips" in a 100 count bag for 9.99.. You will need to replace some anyways.
