My leafs have begun to frown, and I would like to know what everyone recommends for replacements. Not lifting it. I have heard some good about some HD springs? Any help is appreciated. And yes, I did search for those of you who like to yell at people via forums, I prefer current conversation as opposed to old threads.
Replaced mine yesterday with Dorman replacement springs as mine were frowning as well. They're good quality, come with bushings already installed, and brought the rear of my jeep up 2". Now it's sitting level. Picked mine up for $98 a piece with free shipping.
I know you said no lift, but... here's my story:
I was doing a 3" lift on mine. I did the Rusty's add-a-leaf/coil kit. I used the coils/shocks, but sourced my own leafs/ sold the add-a-leafs. I used Old Man Emu 2" HD leafs (I sometimes pull a trailer). They were supposed to add 2", and I was going to do a 1" shackle to make up the difference. Long story short, mine sagged pretty bad. I'm not sure if I was sent standard height spring packs that were mis-labeled, or if they were from a bad batch of springs, but my 2" springs eventually settled to bone stock height. Made some calls, only answers were to send them back for exchange. I'd already re-purposed my stock leafs, so I just used 3" shackles, and went with it.
Other than the sagging issue, I like the springs. They ride nice, even with polyurethane bushings. They're not too stiff, they do flex. The "HD" part is simply an overload spring at the bottom, and I have made use of it a few times. The spring retainers (clamps) had extra-long bolts that did rub on my 2.5" exhaust, but that's probably just because I had to use the 3" shackles. I ground the bolt down and put a dent in the exhaust and they quit rubbing.
As a side note, I respect the desire to stay stock height, but you might consider the 2" springs. 2" isn't much, and a little bit of rake doesn't look terrible on the XJ's, and I've seen some people claim it gets better gas mileage that way (more of a wedge? idk).
