Default new jeep owner need help please!

Hello any help would help I could use it.
1990 jeep Cherokee with 114 k automatic 4x4
Recently started making a rattling noise when I engage it into drive. Light rattle coming from top of transmission. With that said it also has been hard shifting and sometimes dosent shift up.
Another problem I have been having is stuttering/missing at 45mph to about 65mph ?!?!
These problems seem to get worse on longer trips or when the motor is warm.

* idk if this had anything to do with any of these issues but my alternator seems to be making a constant ticking not loud but noticeable.

-thanks

Check trans fluid level first.

I would agree, the transmission has a wired tick about shifting hard or not at all. It's a design to prevent damage from low fluid, any time it shifts Funny it's most likely low fluid, as for the sound at the top of the transmission I hear that every time I get back from deployment cause all the fluid drained into the pan, again, since you drive it daily your fluid is probably real low, any lower and the jeep shouldn't allow you to even start it.

If the Jeep sat around for a while until you got it, the bands in the transmission might have dried out.

The 45-65 stutter could be related, or it could be the lock-up torque converter not functioning properly.

In fact, the torque converter could be causing all of this.

Agreed... As for the fluid getting too low and the jeep not starting, I have a 96 and seen this first hand with my transmission when I blew the O-rings on the pump and also when I blew a seal on the transfer case. I have the AW4 trans with a 242j transfer case.

I would speculate that a torque converter only is about $250 and the labor would be about $500 to replace.

A transmission parts & labor about $1500-2000, be sure to buy a new torque converter while everything is out.

I could be off on my estimates.

You can pick up a new trans for about 1200, not including install, last I checked or a good mechanic can rebuild your old one for about 1600. That's with my AW4 and I can't imagine your trans being much more expensive.
