Default New Head Build Questions?

Hey guys,

My dad's been rebuilding his 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 Liter that had a cracked head cylinder. He has everything apart, cleaned out the oil pan, and has the manifolds off. He finally got a new head from a local auto parts store which sold him a rebuild head. My two questions is does my father need to set the timing, and the valves on the new head? He's worried the timing may have to be set. We also wanted to know what type of oil he should use, and if a 'break in' oil is required? Not sure if we should run a thick straight 30 wt for a few weeks than change the oil out? We've never rebuild a car engine, so we're a little inexperienced but willing to learn. The truck is a secondary car, and we'd like to keep it for the winter, especially after last years NorthEast winter the Cherokee performed wonderfully.

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Needs to do nothing regarding any "timing" of things.

Use Rotella 10-30 and a Wix oil filter.

Rotella T 10w-30 just for break in, or just use it from now on? Any reason why I should go to a diesel engine oil? I've used it with good success on my ATVs and dirtbikes.

No break-in necessary. Rotella IS diesel oil. Keep using it.
