Default New to the form, Engine won't idle.

Hi, I am new to the forum. Somebody referred me from Jeepforum.com. I am old hand with jeeps but this issue has thrown me for a loop. I have a 96 XJ country. I cleaned out my throttle body today and the Idle Air Control valve put it all back together and now it won't idle. If i give it gas i will idle and then idle on its one just barely at 500 RPM but as soon as i put it in gear it will die. I have tried to recalibrate the valve like you are supposed to but it won't work. I did this with my 04 WJ V8 and it worked great. Did i do something wrong or did i wreck the valve?

Sounds like the valve might be toast. What kind of diagnostics have you done?

I have done the same cleaning as you have. It always ran like crap for a day or to then would chill out on its own. The XJ is the only car i have ever seen that can fix it self, ten fall on its face a month later. lol

Check your vacumme hoses. Had the same issue with mine when I got it.

Sounds like something got knocked loose, or broken.

I pulled the valve off again and gave it a light tap and it clicked, I re installed it and it needed a minuet to calibrate but now it's working fine. But I noticed something new, I think my catalytic converter is dead, I can hear a rattling in the exhaust and it sounds like it's from the cat.
