Default New boy needs help.

Hi all.
I have recently bought a 1997 2.5 Diesel cherokee, so far so good great truck and it drives well.
One problem im having is the battery, if I leave the car for a day the starter and battery seem very slow and if I crank for too long the starter motor just stops.
Battery voltage is good, the running voltage is good too.
Ive replaced the battery with a spare one I had in the garage and I think the battery that came with the truck must have been fine.

Is it battery or starter or poor earth??

Many thanks in advance.

My thoughts were the connections could do with a clean, theres a lot of oil around the engine bay.

I also think something is still powered, I know the alarm has been bypassed, wll have a play and come back.

I had a similar problem. Was sure it was the battery so I bought a new one. Several days later I thought I'd got a dud battery as charging system was good and car wouldn't turn over for long before battery died.
Guess what? It was the starter. Was drawing WAY too many amps to start. Got cheap rebuild and been fine every since.

take the battery cable off when u are done driving it, if u go back a day later and it is fine somthing is drawing power when off, otherwise i think jamie57 is right and starter drawing too much

Thanks boys, did some more research and found a few comments about the starter motor being a problem.
Question is if I buy a new one will it do the same thing over time or did they replace the starter with a better one that stopped the problem?
Do I buy a jeep starter or alternative starter? is it worth the risk buying a used starter motor?

Times 3. It happend to me on a 67 mustang. Dont discount the starter. That is what it sounds like to me if the battery is good.

Just a wear item. some run forever and some just give out sooner.
There are several manufacturers of aftermarket and rebuid starters. Some local shops even rebuild starters and alternators QUITE well and if you have a warrenty problem are easier to find and deal with.
I don't think you can buy a starter that is quarenteed for life. Having said that do some research. I could be wrong.

On the used, well on this as well as alternators they're a crap shoot. You may get a good one but unless you can be positive it came out of a very very very (did I say very yet) low milage jeep you have a better than even chance you'll be replacing that one sooner than you'd like.

The diesel has a different starter from the gas engine. The OEM should be a Bosh.
I would try with a NEW battery before changing that starter.
