88 Jeep cherokee, runs aweful when started, no throtle response just chokes out, sputters and sounds like it's bout to die. as soon as it's in gear runs perfect... I"m guessing it has to be a sensor in the transmission that directly impacts the motor.. any idea's are good, If I pop the clutch (cuz it's idling so bad) it all sudden runs like a dream, push the clutch pedal in.. still runs good, shift into neutral..back to running like it's about to die>>

I checked out the wires and the sensor, everything seems ok there. It was sudgested to me that it might be huge cranshaft end play, that the clutch pushes the crank too far ahead and so the sensor misses pulse. does anyone have a solution to this or a sudgestion how to check for this. If I push the clutch all the way in I can hear a whirling sound. stops when I let the clutch out just a bit.
