Default need original wheel size

I want to put original wheels and tires back on my 2001 Cherokee Sport. I've been told they are either 5 X 4 or 5 X 4.5 and both size wheels will fit, That just doesn't sound right to me . I know they are 15 inch wheels but I'm confused over the bolt pattern and what is correct. This is a pic of my truck with the old original wheels.

Thanks! I understand the 5 for the number of studs but how do I measure the 4.5?

If I'm not mistaken, that 5 x 4.5" bolt pattern goes all the way back to the original jeeps and most older Fords, plus a few hundred million trailers of all shapes and sizes.

I've got a bunch of those trailer wheels but I don't know if they actually work on an XJ because of brake disc/drum clearance. I know the offset is different so they might actually work but would be sitting a fair bit outboard of the correct wheels, so they might actually turn. Not sure if it would be unsafe with the tire track being wider ????

If you're buying aftermarket wheels, you also need to pay attention to the offset.
