Need Info On What To Look for on 2001 Sport
I am new to the site and I have never owned a Cherokee before. I have been reading and other than the possible 0331 head issue (Pending it has been swapped) should I look for anything else?
The Cherokee I am going to look at is a 1991 2D Sport 4x4 4.0 5 speed. I already know the floors are not the best on this one, but this is mainly to be used as a dog hauler and to take camping locally. It has approx. 200k miles on it, but I am getting it for less than $1000. I have read the rockers will be more than likely be junk and so forth. My main concerns is basicly all the mechanics. I know 200k is a lot of miles, but from what I have read these motors...excluding the 0331 head...seem to be bullet proof, so I am curious about the rest of it.
Thanks!

If it runs and drives $1000 is a bargin....
Look for anything that you would normally look for in a 200k mile, 10 year old vehicle. Rust, wear, damage and neglect, does everything work. 200K is not that big a deal IF the vehicle has had good maintenance its whole life. If neglected, as most autos are, it is alot of miles for a 10 year old rig.
As for the 0331 head, if it has one. These Have been problems for some, but the cause of failure is almost never the head. The failure was caused by overheating the motor. So if you avoid overheating the head may never be an issue.

$1000 is still an OK price if condition is fair. Otherwise the advise is the same. Treat it as you would any used car purchase. Don't expect a 20 year old XJ to be in the best shape. It will need some work.

Purchased it today for $750. The engine and trans seem great. Need to take a look at the brakes and get the steering wheel in the right direction. The body and floor will be "fun", but it is just what I wanted.
