As you said a 235x75r15 can be stretched to fit, if he tries to wheel it with those 10 inch rims he will not be able to air down much without losing a bead.
As for looks that is pretty much a personal thing, I wheel my rigs and think that anything under 13.50s on 10 inch wide looks like mall crawlers not trail machines.

True, but if the op doesn't wheel his Xj before getting new tires, he won't have any problems with stretched tires. I'm not trying to argue, I'm just offering my opinion. If I was in his position, I would just buy the 15x10 wheels and run them with stretched tires until I got the new tires. It may not be the best option "right now" but it will be benificial in the long run.

too wide of rims can also wear the outer edges of the tires faster.

I understand that is your opinion, just saying I don't agree with you. I don't think it is safe running a tire that calls a 6-7 inch rim on a 10 inch rim that is just nuts. Besides being unsafe for him, if he is driving on public roads, it is a danger for everyone else on the roads. At least if he is running an eight inch rim it isn't that much over the recommended size that it would be unsafe.
Mostly though he will be able to air down and use his Cherokee to go wheeling.

To the OP, here's a list of 69 tires at TireRack in the size 235/75/15. Can u find just one 235/75/15 in the list under "specs" that says it's safe to mount on a 15X10 rim? I can't. Please, don't mount a 235/75/15 tire on a 10" wide rim even if u could find a tire installer dumb enough to do it.

I know hundreds of people who regularly run 185x50x15 tires on 15x10" wheels on their Volkswagens. I've never heard anything about their setups being unsafe on the road; never even a popped bead. As far as being unsafe goes, I disagree with you. Stretched tires on a Jeep I agree would be stupid, but not unsafe.

C'mon guys, the OP's young, got his 1st car, it's his DD and it's an XJ. How 'bout a little LESS chest pounding/muscle flexing and get him started in the right direction. He's asked some good questions about wheels/tires for his DD, not how to convert it to full tube frame competition rock crawler running 5 psi in beadlocks.
Not true, I called nitto and asked the if the 12.5 wide mud grappler could be mounted on an 8 in rim safely, and he said that an 8'' rim was the recomended sarting size for a tire that wide, unlees I was only doing mall crawling, then put it on a 10 in rim. Look it up on them interwebs fool.

Ok fool, go back and re-read, real slow this time so u might get it. Here's a list of 15 12.50 wide tires. All of the mfgs show "measured rim width" on 10" wide rim in their "specs" chart with a minimum rim width of 8.5". Any goober with a tire machine can put a 12.50 tire on a 4" wide rim but MOST MFGS DON"T RECOMMEND IT................FOOL.

I'm not telling him to do anything unsafe, I'm telling him what I've seen on REAL jeep forums. 15x8 is the best size for offroad use. So far this forum is nothing but total newb questions about how they can run over 4.5in of lift without spending the dough on a sye. Geez. He can do whatever the hell he wants its his jeep...a 2wd at that, I'm just saying that you all need to take your tampons out when it comes to questions like this.
