Need help ID'ing my differential and trans

Hey Guys,

Just need help Figuring out what diff I have? I'm having trouble because the diff covers on the Dana 35 and 8.25 look kinda similar...

Anyone know.

It's a 1991 XJ 4.0 with a 231t-case if that matters.

Also what trans would I have a AW4 4-speed?

do you know which one it would be?

The 8.25 is flat on the bottom.

You have a D35 and if it's an auto it's an AW4.

I can see the difference. The 35 has a little bump in the lower left corner and looks MORE oval than an 8.25. The 8.25 has a lip all around the cover and the 35 doesn't............

Part of it is that reference pic only shows the diff cover. When you see the entire housing the differences are more obvious

Thanks for the help. I'm new to Cherokees but not wrenching, just wanted to be sure.

Actually it's a Dana 35....

Here is a picture of a Chrysler 8.25. Notice the flat lip at the bottom, his does not have this.

Also the Chry 8.25 has a 3" diameter tube while the Dana 35 has an approx 2.5" diameter tube.

I stand corrected

Why not just read the cover..... They are stamped DANA if it is a 35... And process of elimination tells the answer..... Unless some dana axles don't have that stamping?

Resurrecting this useful thread.

I wish they were all stamped!

Can you help with mine?
1987 XJ AW4, 4.0L

Front pics I think is DANA 30. The rear is maybe DANA 44?

I'm ordering the gaskets so if anyone can chime in, that would be great.

Yep, D30/D44. Are you buying Lube Locker gaskets? If not, Permatex Ultra Black RTV is all you need.
