I have a 98 XJ. The keyless entry stopped working yesterday. The horn still sounds and the lights. It just won't lock/unlock the doors. I could lock the driver's door manually from inside but not the passenger side door. I had to lock the passenger side with the key. Would this still be caused by the crappy driverside controls?

 

The light on the passenger side button was going on and off too.

 

I have the same issue but mine has been like that since i bought it. Ever figure anything out?

 

have a good look at the wiring under the rubber boot at the door pillar,you may find some broken wires there.the master door lock module is on the passenger side of your xj..(im in England so the master door lock module is on the passenger side on my XJ)...i disconnected the wiring plug to the module and i forget to reconnect it..and i wondered why the door locks didnt work..once i put the plug back into the module it worked..so check under the black rubber boot for broken wiring. if the plug is out of the module or if theres broken wires..the locks wont work...good luck.
