Need guidance - Intermittent starting issue - solenoid just clicks
1997 Cherokee Sport 4.0L. Issue started with the advent of the big thaw here in Montana. So a lot of damp wet conditions.
Starts about 1/2 the time. The other times the starter solenoid just clicks.
I have a 1 month old battery that reads 12.6 Volts.
Tapping the starter got it to start MOST of the time when stranded. All indications pointed towards the starter/solenoid, so I replaced them last night. Still have the issue.
QUESTION: If the starter solenoid clicks, can I rule out the ignition switch, starter relay, and transmission drive/neutral switch, or could there be a weak connection in one of those that is reducing the voltage going to the solenoid?
If I can eliminate the ignition switch, starter relay, and trans switch, I am thinking I will just totally rewire my positive from the battery to the starter, and rewire or service the ground. Input appreciated! This is the wife's daily driver, so you can imagine the family fun this is creating.

Yes, you can generally rule those out as being "totally failed". But, yes, you most likely have a weak connection in there between the battery and the starter. Or a weak battery (but it appears you already tested that).
