Default Need Advice on Cold Air Filter Location Please

oK so i put a K&N cold air filter on my '87 XJ and im trying to decide whether or not to take out the stock air box. all the cold air intake systems ive seen have no air box but the way i see it is if i take the air box out and just leave the filter sitting there, the filter will be picking up mostly hot air from the engine bay. i dont know if this is correct or not. anyway below is a picture of the air filter as it sits in the stock air box right now. im looking for any advice as to whether or not it would be beneficial to remove the air box or better to leave it in. please list pros and cons of doing both if you can. thanks

Supposed to have a box built around it to seal it off from the engine bay. It still gets cold air through the hole that the airbox was fed from by the drivers side headlight.

this is a very common mod on here, a lloott of people put intakes in. i just ripped my stock air box out, i was planning on using the bottom piece as a splash guard but i snapped the two front bolts holding it on, after soaking them in pb blaster, and the one in the rear is holding the bracket thats holding the intake inplace. so i have yet to make a spash guard, but i wanted to make it go all the way up to the hood so it functions as a true cold air as well. ill try to get pics up later, other people should do the same, i would especially like to see some fabbed sheilds so i can get an idea of what i should do.
