Any one knows what this plug goes to, 1998 Jeep Cherokee sport, mounted to the rear of the hood.

 

Looks to be the connector that at one time plugged in to an under the hood light. Remains of the light (it's plastic base) is attached by that bolt to the right.

 

Probably for the underhood light, if equipped. If it was not equipped, that would usually be taped into the harness. My 92 is the same way (with a slightly different plug).

 

I thought that is what this was but not sure. I just bought this jeep a few months ago and finding out little things about it such as why the cruise control was not functioning and also found broken ball type connector broken on cable going to throttle linkage assembly!

The underhood light assembly is a parts binned dodge part. They use them on a bunch of vehicles including the JK and TJ. You can get them pretty cheap on ebay.

Check with you local Jeep dealership.
I bought new one for my '00 little over 5 years ago and paid 10.88.
But my dealership does look out pretty good with the pricing so.....
