Mysterious black pieces from inside air vents.

Mysterious black pieces from inside air vents.
Anyone have any idea what this stuff is and how I get ride of it? It will blow out of the vents into drinks and peoples faces. I always thought it was the cabin air filter disintegrating but I've been told XJs don't have them (Which never made much sense to me). Same thing happened in an old car I used to have too.
