Default my xj idles too fast how do i fix that?

I just fixed my XJ and its running fine not dieing and Stop lights or Bucking when I drive down the Road. I have noticed that its been idling too fast and it seems to be alittle slow going up steep hills. Can anyone help me maybe its another sensor that has to be replaced not sure. The Jeep does have 271,000 Miles on it. Any help would be helpful. Thanks

Did you put the t.p.s back in the same spot,if not just loosen it and change the position of it,it will change the idle,do this with the engine off. You can also change it at the throttle cable.

Thanks guys! I will go work on it tonight and see if that helps any. Ive also noticed that it acts like it wants to die after I start it let it run for a min or so and try and drive it cuts out! But after It warms up its fine. The Temp Gage reads 200-210. Not sure what that is. If you know LMK. IM going through this Jeep since its been sitting for at least a year. Thanks

Hey man, my XJ almost dies when at stoplights and when it does go, it jerks around and feels like its not getting gas to it. Sounds a little similar to what yours was doing...how did you fix it?

Hey buddy- Well i asked a few guys in the forum and they told me to check the TPS Sensor= Trottle Position Sensor, and also the IAC Idle Air Control. I would check both of those they are right next to the trottle body and are very easy to find. Its for a 4.0 Engine! If you have a Shop Manual on your Cherokee look up those Sensors and it will tell you how to pull them off and replace them. If that doesnt work im not sure what it could be. After I replaced the TPS it worked just fine didnt die or buck hard on the high way. I looked at the IAC and it was loose with only 1 screw in it and it was shot. I replaced both and it runs alot better now. Good luck man im always working on my XJ Keep me posted if that works!

Guys I need help here. I replaced the TPS Sensor and the IAC Sensors. This morning when I started it up it died on me but when it gets warm it runs fine. Im not sure what sensor it could be. It idles good but the rpms go up and then all of a sudden they drop still running! Can anyone help me on this. This jeep does have 271,000 miles on it and it has been sitting for over a year before I bought it. Any Help would be appreciated. Thanks

check spark plugs, cap and rotor, all that neat stuff. I did not drive mine until these had been changed.

IAC or ISC (Idle Speed Control) another name for it, if your idle is oscelating (going up and down) between RPM's then its most likely the problem, it could be that one of the resistors in it is shot and it will need to be replaced. You can test it with a volt meter to be certain, but don't know specific readings to the 4.0L.

If the RPM's stay high and dont oscelate, then the TPS (Throttle position sensor) needs adjusting or replacing. Adjusting could be done with a volt meter also.

Like stated above do all the maintnance stuff first especially your fuel filter, injector cleaning, plugs, wires. Also you could try Seafoam, worked great on my cars.

Hope you get it solved.
