My wits end.....89 Cherokee Hard start, Sputtering
Hello and thanks for taking a look! this is is about to be set ablaze!
Anyways, I bought a 89 Cherokee Pioneer with the 4.0. Its ran great untill a little while ago it started acting up. I was driving along and it would just shut off. I would then crank it it would start up and idle up then shut off. I cleaned the fuel pump resister and now it starts very hard, and once it starts it goes to a very high idle and runs ok for about three seconds and dies down and shuts off. the only way to keep it running is by pumping the throttle. If you just step on it it will sputter.
So far I have replaced the dist cap and rotor and put a new IAC on.
Any help would be great with the bugger!

letric parts cleaner
i have two 89s and i was in the same boat. so i disconnected the battery and sprayed all of my electrical connections with electric parts cleaner. mainly the ones aroun the engine, they get gunked up. unplug, spray then plug , then unplug and let dry for a few minutes.reconnect bat and try. you would be suprised how often this works for phantom problems. also the plug for the fuel pump. near center of rear axle. and map sensor.
