And usually the engine would catch on to that and you check engine light would come on with a catalyst system threshold or something like that. Why's it overfilled? Are you going to take some out? You probably don't want to keep it overfilled for a long time

It should start with overfill, however take some out as it is not good practice to have too much oil it the crankcase. Oil leaks, connecting rods tend to dip into the excess oil, etc.

Just MHO, you'd have to really overfill it - like several quarts - to raise the level high enough to cause damage. It can hydrolock, that's a problem, but that would take quite a lot of oil. A quart, I would not even think about, two quarts...I'd think about it for a little while, then go get a beer. Three quarts? I'd drain a couple off just to be safe.
