My next big project...
Ready to rebuild or replace my transmission, looking for some pointers...
I have a 1987 AX4 manual transmission behind a new (<8000 miles) AMC 2.5L inline 4. I replaced the short block last winter and I think I'm getting a hang of fine tuning the Renix system. Now I'm ready to expand my horizons to the driveline. First, is the AX5 an appropriate transmission with my engine, or is there any reason to stick with the 4-speed? Its stock, so I believe my gear ratio is 4.10, and I'll probably regear to 4.88. Is the AX5 a direct swap with the AX4 or are there other considerations I need to make if I do convert to the 5-speed? Finally, can anyone recommend a good place to get replacement transmissions, preferably a local pickup in the Denver area? I found this: http://www.discountjeepparts.com/pro...ducts_id/23154
Is that a good price?
Thanks for your advice and help CF!

You are better off swapping in a trans you wont be rebuilding again. If you want to waste money sure rebuild it. If you have the ax4 you more then likely have 3.55's or 3.73's. The ax5 came with 3.73's or 4.10's.
You wont need any different linkage the ax4 and ax5 are essentially the same trans just with the 5 having overdrive.
