Did it idle good before? If so vacuum leak, plugs/ wires. fuel filter, throttle kicker motor if you have one, dirty carb, compression issue? Start with the easy stuff.

I have the same engine and the same problem. I would suspect either the carb is full of gunk, or the vacuum lines are bad. Then again, I've cleaned the $#!+ out of mine, and replaced almost all the vacuum hoses, and the adjustments just don't go far enough to fix it up...the Rochester carbs are pretty unreliable, and you have to be very carful changing the idle or else the engine will rev out of control when it heats up.

TBI for the win!

Had the same thing happen to me from bad gas plugging the idle jets. You can turn up the idle with the screw on the linkage

I did this, and I must say that you really, really don't want it too high. It may seem awesome at cold, but mine did until it warmed up and started revving to 3000.

You just want to screw down the idle screw until you get into the primary jets, not the secondary jets. Mine idled at 1100 rpm which worked well with the lack of horsepower.
