Default Motor and Transmission Mounts Tips

Hey all,

Just replaced my motor mounts and transmission mount. Pretty easy job other than the prying and jacking to get the motor mounts in position for all the bolts to go in. Just thought I'd leave some tips for anyone in the future doing some searching. Sorry for not taking pics lol. This is for the 4.0 with the AW4. No idea if any other combination is the same.

For the motor mounts:

1. Ensure the bolts and nuts are loose on both sides from motor mounts to frame when trying to line the mounts up during the install process.

2. I read to jack from under the oil pan with a 2x4 or larger to distribute the weight. I ended up using a 2x4 and jacking up on the crankshaft pulley. Way easier to adjust the engine height.

3. Jacking up the Jeep from the frame would give you easier access to the two nuts on the bottom of the frame. If you have a large jack then do it. I only have the one 2 ton jack so I didn't feel like going through the trouble.

4. Probably the best tip if you don't want to take out more than the air box on the driver side: put the through bolt through going towards the front of the Jeep. Meaning the head of the bolt will be closer to the driver seat. This will make it much easier to torque this bolt. I had to torque it one, and sometimes two if the stars aligned, click at a time.

5. Torque specs: for the bolt/nut and stud to the frame - 30 ft. Lbs
For the through bolt - 48 ft. Lbs

Transmission mount:

This part is mainly just for the torque specs as I had a hard time finding them altogether...

1. Note how the mount is oriented when you take it off, it fits both ways.

2. If the stud for the crossmember won't fit on the driver side (the passenger side is elongated) then lower/raise the transmission with your jack till it lines up. I ended up lowering the transmission until it was pressing on the crossmember then giving it one good wack with my BFH.

3. Torque specs

Transmission mount to transmission (two 18mm bolts): 55 ft. Lbs.

Crossmember to transmission mount (four 13mm nuts): 155 in. Lbs (16 ft. Lbs My torque wrench goes this low, I hope it's accurate at that low of torque haha)

Crossmember to uniframe (two 15mm bolts and two 15mm nuts): 30 ft. Lbs.

For searchability:

Anyways hope you guys don't think this is just common knowledge lol, if it helps one person my time writing this was well spent. Also those torque specs were from memory (I did this today) and I'm 99% sure on all of them, but if you catch a mistake let me know and I'll edit it.

Thanks for reading,
Ryan

Cool ,, thanks for posting..

I would also like to ad.. When doing motor mounts make sure you loosen the transmission mount bolts(or crossmember bolts, use floor jack to support trans)..
Not doing so might damage the trans mount when moving the motor around for the motor-mounts .. Or cause excessive vibration after motor mount installation
If replacing the Trans mount anyways it still helps to do so,,allows for easy motor positioning for the mounts..

I'm sure someone will find this helpful! Thanks for passing on your experience!

I don't think there is actually a torque spec for the through bolt per se. I'm sure they mention one in the FSM or something like that. But they are really just supposed to be "tight enough". Too tight, and you'll feel more vibes. Brown Dog has some good info in their tips/instructions.

If they put a piece of paper that has some simple instructions and tips in the package, that's awesome. I wish more of the guys on here, and just in general, that sell stuff regularly did that. Would just have to type it once lol.
