Do a search, this has been discussed at least once a day. Personally I have always used conventional 10w30 and at 87k miles I am still running fine. *knock on wood*.

Here is a recent thread that will probably answer all of your questions.
Using synthetics in an XJ will cause a break in the space-time continuum OR not using synthetics in an XJ will cause yours and all other XJ's to seize immediately. I think there is some debate. It sounds familiar.
I use conventional with a shot of Slick 50 every 3000 miles and it is not my daily driver, so it sits alot. 10 years old and 150k miles, she still runs like a dream.

The engine will be fine, but you'll probably form an oil leak or two if you dont have one already
. I know mine did! Leaked a quart every couple of weeks, but it wouldn't be a jeep if it didn't
