i have to change the motor mounts on 94 xj when i did this last time on the 88 xj i had an oil leak coming from the oil pan, im not sure if this is related but does jacking up the engine for motor mount replacement with some wood and a jack hurt the oil pan seal ?


maybe there is another alternative way ?

I have done this same thing on a 98 and 99. I put a block of wood between the jack and pan and I didn't notice and long term ill effects. The weight will get distributed pretty evenly.

i have been looking underneath to somehow try support it with a jack at the engine bracket, i know it doesnt need that much to raise it only small amount but there is not much room to do it that way.. hmm

I use a small piece of 2x4 right under the oil sump, where the X looking indentation is. That is really strong and will not buckle. You really don't need to raise it much. Raise it enough to take the pressure off the engine mount bolts and it's a piece of cake.

 

yeah thats true, i probably end up doing it that way with wood under the pan..

If your bolts were loose, I could see the jacking causing the gasket to get sheared, maybe.

Otherwise, I don't see a problem.

 

ok, appreciate the replies its not leaking thats why hehe i dont want to cause another issue while fixing another, think i'll just try it carefully

I suspect you are going to fight it now.

That's usually the result when shortcuts are taken. The price gets paid down the road, sometimes.

If you find it a fight, you can always unbolt things and jack up the trans to its normal location. Pick up a cheap bottle jack from Harbor Freight to help out.

 

 

An expensive aftermarket driveshaft.

 

ummm. An sye, possibly some shims, and a front driveshaft from another cherokee.

 

 

here is the old and the new one, the old one is from the drivers side the passenger side wasnt cracked at all but replaced both left and right at the same time. surprisingly i had no vibrations but the jerk from drive to reverse and back is much less.

edit: you would think by looking at the old one the weakest part is hte thin top area of the mount that they would make that stronger

 

this is one of the few parts (I have learned) to often just do just LH side, especially if they are on the exhaust manifold side

as the engine attempts to rotate the entire car, the way force is expressed upon LH vs RH mount is very different

both my XJ LH mounts completely toasted, RH fine

even on V-Engine vehicles, LH goes way before RH

might sound stingy, but every cent counts when it is your own

since applying this method, I have never replaced a RH mount
