Quote: uh. for a daily driver, spools are bad. your tires will wear considerably when turning, and theyre a nuisance in rain or snow. by nuisance i mean hazard. spools should be pretty much left for mud boggers and drag racers.
Quote: As stated prior a spool or mini spool is for pretty much drag race only. A very good friend of mine has a race car that runs 8.40's on the quarter with a 496 big block chevy. It has a spool in the rear end, thats the only use i see for one.

Could you put one in your jeep "Yes" would it be the best idea to do it on a DD "No"

Every one wants to be a tough guy and say" i run a spool" or i have welded spiders. Yeah and nothing will ever happen to me and if i hit some water on the street its more fun cause ill spin out. Speaking that i do have a daughter, thats what slowed me down cause i used to be one of those idiots.

What if someones kid was playing on the side walk and you hit some water and slid out of control and hit them? would you still have that same cool guy attitude? Im not attacking you but, ive seen things like this happen and i dont mean any disrespect.

Please people be safe out on our public roads, that is why we have our jeeps to have fun off road.
Quote: when turning corners at any speed.. but say a sharp corner... and speed limit is 35... in normal rear.. all 4 tires will grip... with a locked dif.... one tire will automaticly start spining..... In other words.. you might find yourself on side of road in ditch real real quick.... or worse.. head on into somone eles...its a very bad idea...

been 3 years spooled and not once have i spontaneously spun out into a ditch. and this is in new england rain, snow, blizzards and whatnot. it's a perdictable setup. and i have delivered pizzas with it, and have driven like a moron at times, not a single issue

Quote: In terms of strain on the drivetrain components, how much worse do you think a spool is than a locker? In turns, its obvious, but if you were wheeling, jammed a tire on a rock, and punched the accelerator (I know that's not smart, just setting up a situation..) which would cause breakage first? or would it be the same? please, answers from experience
same thing will break if you have a locker
i build my rearends to not break, and so far i havent broken anything that was a result from having a spool.

ive read all kinds about welded gears... but welded gears are different then a spool... why? because a spool is reversable if you dont like it... and for $50 while getting the same actions as welding your gears... well anyone who welds them is not very smart i guess...

Huntingman,
Your chop looks great. Can't wait to try one soon. When will your profile pic tires mount up? Sorry your thread came to this. Didn't know people would persecute others because they don't post very often??? Let me know how your spool works out. I want to throw one in when my Lockright gives up.
