Default Mech fan question

Is it supposed to be spinning when my jeep isn't warmed up yet? My thermo being stuck open be doing that? Clutch and everything is new, and would that maybe why my heater sucks?

Maybe you should describe a little further what you mean by:
"Mech fan"

Yes! The mechanical fan will always spin. But it will spin faster when it heats up.

How can I tell if I need a thermo without taking it out? I don't have an electric fan right now so I can't use that to tell

If it's stuck open the Jeep will take forever to warm up. You can test for it by aiming an infrared thermometer at the upper radiator hose while waiting for the engine to warm up. If the hose gradually gets hotter than the thermostat is open. If it suddenly jumps up in temp (hard to say at which temp, some people replace the thermostat with a low-temp one for some reason) then it's fine.

The one that should be in there is a Mopar 195 degree unit. Avoid failsafe crap.

You may also have clogged hoses or heater core. I take it the point of this thread is "my heat doesn't work"?

You are quite confused and are confusing everyone else. First check and see that your heater is connected and that nobody has bypassed it. If it is connected, chances are your thermostat is stuck open or you don't have one. Your mechanical fan is a separate issue, it should spin freely when cold, and almost lock when hot. The T-stat should be replaced and it is very simple to do. I changed mine yesterday and it took me 10 minutes, most of it cleaning the old gasket off, you don't even have to remove the hoses off the housing.
Hope this helps.

Going by what's been post is kinda like pulling hens teeth. My guess is nothing is new (vs everything), except for the fan clutch. Might not even be a t-stat in there but u gotta pull the cover to inspect/replace it. The main ingredient for a good heater is hot water rapidly flowing thru the heater core. The mech fan and efan have nothing to do with rapidly flowing hot water. Time to raise the hood, spin a wrench, get down and dirty.
