1996 Cherokee 4x4 5-spd. Problem: When driving in 3rd or 4th gear, and needing to downshift but don't, I feel a complete miss or slip. This is not the typical chugging that comes with needing to downshift. Ideas? Also, reverse grinds only in warm weather. Expansion /contraction of some mystery part?

 

the reverse thing no big deal. reverse is not a synchro'd gear like 1-5 try puttin it in 4th first then reverse, it stops tranny from spinnin so fast thus causing the grind. the 3rd-4th thing sound more like engine than tranny, you just feel it through jeep cause there is no slip like with a torque converter in a auto trans. mine was bad injectors in my 94 5spd. also if you lug your motor(too low of rpms it will do same thing) so sounds like a engine thing to me.

 

Thanks for the tip. Im excited to have such information at my fingertips. Ive been buying Kroger gas and a mechanic told me that was my problem. I put Sea foam in the gas, we will see on the missing or slipping. Another thing that concerns me is the slipping clutch the first few minutes of driving. Seems to me something is dripping on it them burning off when it heats up? What is dripping if it is? Also, I could not get it out of 4wd the other day. Finally did. I was thinking of changing fluids in Trans and transfer case. Ideas?
