Hey all,

Over the long weekend, the family and I decided to go fishing on a mountain about 35 minutes away from our home. The climb can get fairly steep is places. On the way up, I came along a convoy of two trucks pulling trailers and I saw my chance to pass, so I took it. But my Jeep wouldn't drop in to 2nd, it chugged along in 3rd with my foot to the floor and I was forced to drop back in to my original position.

In general, my Jeep just feels sluggish lately and based on the heavy exhaust smell, it seems like it might be running rich. I was told that O2 Sensors and the Coolant Temp Sensor control fuel trims, is that true? I replaced the O2 sensor(s) recently with an exhaust overhaul. Now I am thinking the Cooling system may need an overhaul (Brown, rusted, nastiness). I flushed the coolant out about a year ago and it was a nice green hue when I was done, but it's back to it's nasty brown again, so I'm thinking the coolant sensor may have a coating of rust on it preventing proper temp reporting (though the gauge always shows 210) causing the Jeep to think it's cold.

Thoughts? Am I looking in the right places?

Thanks!

Might want to get her checked for any tripped codes. Last summer I had IAC fail. Repaired it but got a code 22 (CTS sensor). Pulled it and polished it with a 3M pad. That fixed it.

Have you ever adjusted your throttle valve (TV) cable?

I'll check on the codes...

I pulled and cleaned the IAC just recently...during my last SeaFoam. The weird thing about the SeaFoam is that there was almost no smoke last time. I usually smoke out the neighborhood.

I followed the directions for the TV cable adjustment and my Jeep about gave me whiplash. I dropped back down to a reasonable level.

Thanks for the reply!

EZEARL, I re-read your message and I had a question...what did you pull and polish with a 3M pad? The IAC or the CTS?

Thanks!

The problems I had were a low idle and not wanting to start w/o giving some throttle. First thing I did was the IAC. I cleaned both it and the throttle body. Fixed things but not 100%. Got to searching and found that the CTS is another component that affects the air/fuel mixture. Decided to check it out. When I pulled it the sensor was black. Not something you could scrape off though. Nothing to lose so I polished it. Ended up a shiny brass color. Put it back in and all was good and code 22 was gone.

What I wanted to do with the IAC was test it but couldn't find a procedure right then. About month later my idle problem started to act up. Luckily I also had found a test for the IAC. Turned out it was out of spec. Replaced it and all has been good since.

IAC ohms test:
contacts are A B C D in order.
A to D = 40 to 80 ohms
B to C = 40 to 80 ohms

B to C = open
C to D = open
