Default lovely check engine

hey guys, so i've had my cherokee for quite a while, just havn't gotten into the forums till my car came along. Anyways, today i was out wheeling with a friend and as usual my jeep gets hotter while revving a lot and not going very fast. so as i was waiting for someone i shut it off for a bit. when i started it back up she was running kinda rough but then cleared up. then a while later i noticed the check engine light was on. it never has before so i'm kinda weirded out. i've got a 97 cherokee sport... straight six. yeah, new here so don't know what your all dealing with, but anyways word of wisdom would be awesome. i'll prolly look into it more tomorrow but ideas would be great. hope this forum is as good as my cars.

vapor lock. these 4.0's run real hot, so when your out on the trail either leave it running or open your hood to let it cool a little. it's happened to me a few times and i've seen it happen to other XJ's on the trail. get the codes read and i'm pretty sure it will read as a cylinder misfire.

I found this: http://jeephorizons.com/tech/xj_cooling.html . I don't know if it applies here but it sounds like it could be helpful since a lot of 4.0 owners are having overheating issues.
