Default loud grinding when switching from 4hi to 4lo

There is a loud grinding sound when i switch from 4 high to 4 I'm pretty sure this is not normal but was just wondering if anyone else had had this problem. Im hoping my transfer case isn't crapping out on me or anything because if the grinding is the gears it may be and i can't really afford a new T-case. Any ideas on what it is? thanks

Are you stopped and in neutral when changing it?
If not that is normal.

ALWAYS stop and put the tranny in neutral when moving selector from low-high or high-low.

Happens to me too. Give it a few seconds in neutral and throw in in 4 low fast and make sure it's ALL the way in 4 low. Then hold it in 4 low when you put it in drive...that usually works for me and it's never made any noises doing it that way.
I think it's because sometimes the teeth don't line up and when it goes into 4low it pops out when you put it in drive, causing the grinding...so holding it to keep from popping out helps.
