Default Loud Engine Knock

I need some help diagnosing a sound in my engine. I was on the gas to get in front of some traffic and right when I let off I noticed the sound. I parked as soon as I could, then took this video i have attached and then had it towed home. I think it is a bent rod or something like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a video of the sound:

Im confused. What does a flexplate do and why would it break, and not the push rod? I'm not too familiar engine components so educate me.

Flex plate is between the torque converter and engine. It basically just connects the two, but it is thin enough and weak enough to allow things to flex and it often breaks before anythings else.
