so the jeep is due for some new oil, so i ventured out today picked up some supplies...rotella 5w-40, a new mopar filter.
in preparation for the oil change i figured i would also get some marvel mystery oil to remove any accumulated gunk.
and since my engine bay was absolutely filthy, i picked up some purple power.
went to the car wash, used the entire bottle of p. power under the hood, and in the engine bay. hosed it off, and now i'm not ashamed to let people see the 4.0!
put about half the bottle of MMO into the crankcase for the drive home
about 5 minutes into my drive home i noticed a couple of things....first the persistant tick of the valvetrain was not making any noise, and second, the throttle response is back, acceleration is smooth, and the overall noise of the jeep is less.
perhaps its just coincidence, or maybe the MMO loosened up some gunk internally that was blocking oil passages or something.
the other thing i thought of, is maybe de-gunking the motor on the outside made some difference. i have heard that in order for 02 sensors to work properly, they need to sense the ambient air through small holes on the outside of the sensor.....perhaps those were clogged??
it seems that my gas mileage is back to normal, it has really been sucking down the fuel lately....
and its wierd to not have the constant audible tick from the motor, as well as it not sounding like a diesel!!!

How did you apply the purple power and did you just let it dwell and hose off, or scrub it? What's marvel mystery oil? Is that a brand?
Sounds like I should do this to my 91.
Did you try to keep the water away from the electronics?
Thanks

i just sprayed the purple power liberally on just about anything that looked dirty under the hood. as i was in the wash bay while doing this, i took a few minutes to get some quarters, smoke a cigarette, make sure the doors and windows were closed, and get the sprayer all set up. i used the high pressure soap setting, but only squeezed the handle (to get the full flow of water) on areas that had no electrical connections....otherwise i just used the lower pressure spray that was coming out.
i also left the motor running while using the carwash, i figure it may prevent it from not starting. rinsed it real well using the low pressure rinse, and was done.
marvel mystery oil is a seafoam type product, you can normally find it where seafoam is sold.

I had good luck with MMO as well. Helped clear up my lifter tick as well. My only concern is the 40w oil is too heavy for winter time. Let me know how it goes, I have been switching to 5w30 during the winter months in fear of 40w taking too long to warm up. Im no oil expert so I just go by factory specs.

i actually picked up the rotella t6 full synthetic in 5w-40....supposed to be better than the standard rotella t. better low temp flow, etc.....i was thinking, i could always add 2 quarts of 5w30 to the 4 quarts of 5w-40.. which would make it 5w-36ish???
Stick with the 5W40. Works great here in Michigan. Also quieted up Son's '01 with 140K miles. We change every 5K with K & N oil filter. Cold starts oil acts like 5W. Only after it warms will viscosity climb appropriately.

the jeep i'm buying for my wife is ticking...i think it's the valvetrain, the guy i'm buying it from thinks it's the bottom end... still owe $300 on it, so i havent picked if up yet, therefore i havent diagnosed it thoroughly... i think i'm going to pick up a quart of marvel, some cheap 5w30, and an oil filter and try changing the oil before i do anything else...if it turns out to be a true mechanical problem, i will end up having to change the oil anyways, and if it fixes it, i will run it for a little while, then on the next oil change switch to better oil...
whats everyone prefer oil wise? i run Mobil Clean 5000 in my 5.0 thunderbird what's got over 200000 miles on the engine and i run the ever living **** out of it and it's still running strong...6000+ rpm's on a daily basis...

5w-40, 10w-40, its all the same at operating temp. And your not using a 40w oil in your jeep, you mean from 5w40 to 5w30? Same oil at startup, different at operating temp.

The low number is how it acts in colder temps the other is how it acts at normal operating temp. 5-40 is not needed in a mechanically sound 4.0 engine. It just acts thicker at higher temps which is not needed unless you have alot of engine wear. I have been using 10-30 Mobil 1 syn for the last 20000 or so miles and its great. It good rid of the top engine noises and starts up with no issue in the morning no matter what the temp is. Ive been thinking of going to 5-30 because I feel my engine is sound even at 240000 but i'm hesitant. Probably just stick with whats working as I run it in My girls 06 TJ 4.0 also and its just easier that way.
I was thinking of using some seafoam in my cherokee. IS this a waste of money? I'm not going to use it for any specific reason, just thought it would be good for the engine. I have a bout 160000 miles on it.

I sell tons of seafoam at my store and think it works as a fuel system cleaner. The one guy that works for did the 1/3 crankcase, gas tank and booster line thing and within a week he had a bad lifter noise and than blew the motor up. The lobe on the lifter broke where it turned and split into 2 pieces wiping out his engine. Just a coincidence that happened right after the seafoam? Who knows, but I do know thats not the first time that happened after seafoam in the crankcase. Some engines and transmissions are just better left alone sometimes. The sludge or gunk or whatever sometimes is whats helping it stay alive. His engine was a 2.2 chevy with 102000 miles on it and he was just doing it to do it. Impossible to prove but to me very likely. I now warn people about it when they buy it from me. I do beleive it has great properities for your fuel.
Never used Seafoam, but have used MMO for many years. Never had any issue, whatsoever. Never put it in the gas tank...always in the crankcase.
As to oil, I'm wondering about Rotella. I've heard from one person that it's a good oil, but this is a guy who saves money by using form a gasket instead of real gaskets...hack.
All I run is Castrol, and moved to Castrol synthetic around 100K. Used to use Valvoline religiously, and it's a fine oil. Castrol seems to run a little cleaner, though.
So, what's the consensus on Rotella? Just curious.

MMO is one of the best additives around since forever. I will run it for a couple of tanks then change the oil and add a can of STP, another tried and true additive.
