Looking for first XJ... is this a good deal?

Is that price good considering the blown head gasket and needs a clutch fan and 200k? Should I get another Jeep? I also found one for $650 that only needs an A/C compressor and hatch adjustment, but the one in the link has a 3" lift and M/Ts which I would end up doing anyway. My dad is a mechanic and we are looking for something we could work on and fix up together. Also, I don't want to be stuck having to do an engine swap in another 50k or so. What are your thoughts? Thanks

I say wait for like a 1200-1500 cherokee maybe. This one seems like a little much but if your dad is a mechanic then he may know better about the engine's condition, and it may be a good deal. For the price of the vehicle overall though the lift and tires would cost you about that much if you did it yourself with brand new components. Soooo lol just take a look into it but make sure you definitely look over it well bc it looks like it easily has a chance of going bad real quick to me.

dont do it, i probably would never buy an already modified vehicle. i mean come on, he couldnt even clean it up for the ad picture? thats a red flag right there. you can easily pick up a running stocker for $700.

You can find a better deal...
I just picked up a 2000 XJ Limited for 600.00 w/ blown 4.0 even with the engine swap still a hell of a deal i think. Needs a/c comp, and cleaned out...the body is in great shape, stock, needs tires....interior just needs cleaned, leather int.power everything...175K on it..You can find better deals than what that guy has...just have to be patient and keep looking...i agree under all the mud how much rust and damage is hiding, and if he did put a lift on it....what did or ddin't he do right?? You gotta watch people selling there "modded rides" they'll getcha.

Very good point. If you get a 2.8L you are going to be unhappy. Plus it's gonna have those vacuum disconnect axles since it's pre-90s. If you are patient and keep your eyes peeled, you should be able to find a running 4.0L 4x4 for around the price this guy is asking for his.
For example, I just bought a stock 2-door '94 for half what this guy is asking. Mind you, it's not got a lift, and the suspension/brakes are shot... and it's pretty rusty... but it runs and moves under it's own power just fine.

You'll be throwin cash at this like a small war, I'd say a grand minimum to get it in decent DD condition, not counting all the time, labor, trips to the auto parts store, beer, busted knuckles and screaming and cussing it will take to get this thing road worthy.

Thanks for all the quick replies, now that I think I agree with all that you're saying. And I definitely want a 6cyl. I looked at some other ads and there are running ones for little more than this one. I think I should get one stock because I can't even drive yet, so I will have room to upgrade and get it how I want and know it's done right. So now, another question. What is the highest mileage I should get?
