Look what happened to my T/C !!!
Excessive chain slap caused this one:
-
-
It all started a looong time ago.
We purchassed this '95 off of our friends....one owner.
It was maintained well, exceot for the fact the T/C has no dipstick
My wife has been drivng it. And with all the wind noise, and other creeks/sounds the radio was used to drown out the sounds.
Well, I decided to drive it one time and heard this bearing/metal to metal sound.
"WTF is this, how long has it been doing this ?!"
"OH that, it does that, I just turn the radio louder..."
She knew better, but just figured it was a 'Jeep thing'
So I lift her up and realize the T/C is bone dry !!. By this time, the damage is done.
One day, I uses the Jeep to pull my boat out my dirt backyard, and wasn't getting traction, so I tried 4HI...then got a violent shutter from the thing (I knew something was really wrong, output was skipping on the loose chain)
I filled it completely, The sound went away about 90%. But about two weeks later, because of the excessive chain slap, the bottom of the case cracked open.
Believe it or not, shes been commuting in this thing for the last two weeks with ZERO lubrication... hundreds of miles ..... .....
Cannot believe it hasn't grenaded any sooner.
So last night, I threw it up on my lift, and yanked it out.
I'm off to PNP today to go find another one.
My Jeep has the 'Command Trac' NP 231 J ... According to my manual, it came equipped with two models.
Is there a better one of the two ??
Will they both bolt on ?? (drivelines, linkages, harness, etc.)
Thanks .... Pictures:

On the lift...look closely, you can see the chain.....

After I pulled it, sitting in my truck....topside.....

They'll all work.
I've seen that several times in the past.
I'd take her radio out while she puts the new t-case in.

The 2 tcases you are referring to is the 231 and 242 case. As you already know the 231 is what you have and the 242 is the other option that was available. Both will directly bolt in place. Only difference is that the 242 has a full time 4wd range while the 231 does not. Also the 242 is a tad longer and your driveshaft MAY not fit accordingly. If you swap to a 242 Id suggest getting the shiftgate also since it has the correct shift positions.

IIRC you want one from 91-95 if you want your 4wd light to work and be a direct bolt in. 97-01 should work fine also just your 4wd light on the dash wont work cause of the change in connectors I believe. Anything before 91 will not work since the spline count is different.

I can manage the wiring, I found a 98 in a yard .... that has some a-pillars I need for a '62 GMC I'm working on.
Just not sure if its a 4wd, or has the 231 untill I make the drive....

If the case has enough wear to run a hole thru the side and grind for two years then it's done. It'd be better served sitting on top of your keyboard.
The chain kit costs 5 times what he'll pay for a used case at the PNP.

I posted that question right from PNP ....
I started to walk out the yard, and then spoted two more ... one was a 2wd, and the other was a clean, 92 with only 100,340 miles on it.
The tranny and T/C were super clean. Checked the play in the driveline outputs, and it felt tight. Yanked it, and after paying $166, I was out ....
Got it all back together this afternoon as well as a tranny service and oil change.
Also got some long self tapping 1/4x20 screws into the Cat, to stop the rattle...untill next smog time !!
We are good !!
Thanks for everyones help !!

Good work-I think you should repost this under the title-What my wife did to the Jeep...
Years ago, we had an '87 Park Avenue. Beautiful car. Drove like a dream. My wife drove it with the kids etc. One day I went to take the car to get some milk and it wouldn't go in reverse. She said, "Oh-it's being doing that lately but I just give it gas and it goes ok". Turned out the trans cooler lines had rotted out and all the fluid was gone. Very expensive!
