I didn't grow up around vehicles and my dad never taught me to work on them so I'm learning all the terms and everything for the first time. It's frustrating, but I want to learn.
well this is a good place for it. No worries. Kneel down by the front tire and try to rotate the tire front and back with the ebrake on. If the joint is bad, you should (not always) be able to replicate the sound. Try that.
Your joints are rebuildable.
Basically they are probably worn out.
The easy way to tell is to have someone rock the jeep back and forth while you watch for play in the joints. It will be pretty obvious.
